À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ appoints new Senior Investigators, including seven Imperial BRC researchers

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ) has appointed in 2023 across England, including five researchers who are part of the À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Imperial BRC and working across a number of our research themes.

À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Senior Investigators are among the most prominent and prestigious researchers funded by the À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ. They are outstanding leaders of patient and people-based research within the À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ research community. Senior Investigators receive an award of £20,000 per year of appointment to fund activities that support their research.

There are four new appointments of researchers involved in the À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Imperial BRC:

  • Professor Adnan Custovic, Professor of Paediatric Allergy at Imperial College London and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Allergy at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
  • Professor Anthony Gordon, Professor of Critical Care at Imperial College London and Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
  • Professor Sonia Saxena, Professor of Primary Care at Imperial College London
  • Professor Peter Openshaw, Professor of Experimental Medicine at Imperial College London (Emeritus SI)

As well as three re-appointments of researchers involved in the À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Imperial BRC:

  • Professor Mark Thursz, Director of the À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Imperial BRC, Professor of Hepatology at Imperial College London and Consultant in Hepatology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
  • Professor Mike Crawford, Professor of Mental Health Research at Imperial College London
  • Professor Alison Holmes, Professor of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London

This round of appointments brings the College of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Senior Investigators to 197 active members. À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ’s Senior Investigators have diverse professional backgrounds in social care, nursing and midwifery, public health, and include allied health professionals, pharmacists, clinical scientists and methodologists. 14 new À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Emeritus Senior Investigators have been created in 2023. This gives a total of 205 Emeritus Senior Investigators.

À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Senior Investigators are critical to the ongoing success of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ as they help to develop the health research capability for the challenges we must meet. An independent expert committee, chaired by highly reputed members, made recommendations to the Department of Health and Social Care on the 2023 appointments.
